Making use of a great resource.

This page and project are in progress.

One of the primary goals of this project was to make the environment more educationally friendly, and add interactive elements like the sensory bench above, worm farms, and potentially more as the project progresses.

Soil Sensory Bench

The "soil sensory bench" presents an invaluable learning opportunity for students, offering a hands-on experience that engages multiple senses in understanding soil composition. By providing a platform to mix soil ingredients for potting mixes, learners gain practical insights into the intricate relationship between the various components and their relation to plant growth. This tactile approach allows students to experiment with various combinations, fostering a deeper understanding of soil structure, texture, and nutrient content. Moreover, the sensory aspect of the bench encourages students to actively engage with the material. Overall, the soil sensory bench promotes experiential learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills essential for growing healthy plants!

Worm Farm (Vermicomposting)

Vermicomposting is using worms to compost organic materials, and it offers great hands-on learning opportunities. Students are able to witness the transformation of organic waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment, which aids in understanding the role of decomposers and biodiversity as they relate to soil health. It promotes environmental awareness by showcasing sustainable waste management, while demonstrating the benefits of worms and their ability to improve soil fertility and structure. Vermicomposting can be done at various scales, and the process integrates biology, ecology, and sustainability, providing a comprehensive understanding of nutrient cycling and soil health.
